Registrars / DNSimple

Track your DNSimple domains.
nmspc reads your DNSimple domains and DNS records with an access token and reminds you before anything expires. It never changes them.

nmspc reads your DNSimple account through DNSimple's API v2: when each registered domain expires, whether auto-renew is on, which domains only have DNS hosted there, and the DNS records of your zones. nmspc lists what it finds and you choose which domains to track; nothing is added by itself. On Free it syncs when you press Sync now, on Pro every day.

Connect DNSimple

Steps

  1. In DNSimple, pick the account (top right if you have several), open the account page and choose API & Access. Press Add and name the token nmspc.
  2. On Solo Pro, Teams or Enterprise you can choose permissions: set Domains and Zones to Read only and leave the rest off. On Solo, DNSimple gives every token full access.
  3. Press Generate token and copy it; DNSimple shows it only once. An account token is best. With a user token that reaches several accounts, also paste the account ID: the number after /a/ in DNSimple's address bar.
  4. Paste it below. nmspc only reads, and stores the token encrypted.

What nmspc reads

  • The domains in your DNSimple account, registered there or only hosted for DNS.
  • Each registered domain's expiry date and auto-renew setting.
  • DNS records of your DNSimple zones.

What nmspc never does

  • Renew, transfer, register or delete a domain.
  • Change DNS records, nameservers, contacts or auto-renew.
  • Buy anything or touch your payment details.

Can the token change your account?

nmspc can't check what a DNSimple token is allowed to do, so treat it as one that can change your DNSimple account. nmspc only ever reads with it.

Before nmspc stores it, the workspace owner ticks “I allow nmspc to store a token that can change my DNSimple account”.

If it doesn't connect

  • DNSimple didn't accept the token, or nmspc couldn't tell which account to read. Paste an account access token from the account's API & Access page. For a user token that reaches several accounts, also fill in the account ID (the number after /a/ in DNSimple's address bar).
  • DNSimple refused to list domains with this token. If you limited its permissions, give it read access to Domains (and Zones for DNS records) and fill in the account ID, or use a token without limits.
  • DNSimple is limiting calls right now: either the hourly limit (2,400 calls) is used up or there were too many failed sign-ins, which blocks the API for up to an hour. Try again later.
  • DNSimple says the account isn't subscribed or has unpaid invoices, so its API refuses the call. Sort it out in DNSimple, then connect again.

Moving a domain away from DNSimple

  1. Pick the account, open Domain Names, click the domain and open its Registration tab.
  2. Under Domain transfer, click Transfer out and then Request Transfer Out. Click it once: asking again slows delivery.
  3. DNSimple unlocks the domain and emails the code to the registrant's address within about 6 hours. Check that address first.
  4. Change nameservers before the transfer starts if you need to; once it starts, they can't be changed. The transfer begins when you start it at the new registrar.

How do I create a DNSimple access token for nmspc?

Pick the account, open the account page and choose API & Access. Press Add, name the token, and on Solo Pro, Teams or Enterprise set Domains and Zones to Read only. Press Generate token and copy it: DNSimple shows it only once.

An account token reaches one account, which is what nmspc needs. With a user token that reaches several accounts, also give nmspc the account ID: the number after /a/ in DNSimple's address bar.

Can the DNSimple token change my account?

nmspc can't check what a DNSimple token is allowed to do, so treat it as one that can change your DNSimple account. nmspc only ever reads with it.

On Solo Pro and higher plans you can make a token that may only read, but DNSimple's API doesn't tell nmspc what a token may do, so the owner of the nmspc workspace ticks a box to allow storing it. The token is stored encrypted and only used for reading.

How do I turn auto-renew on or off at DNSimple?

Open the domain's page. Choose Auto-renew for (with the yearly price) to turn it on, or Disable auto-renewal to turn it off. It can't be turned off while a renewal is in progress.

New registrations auto-renew by default, and some endings (.ch, .es, .jp, .li, .nl among them) can only be renewed automatically. nmspc shows the new setting after its next sync.

Does DNSimple send renewal reminders?

For .com and other generic endings, ICANN requires DNSimple, like every accredited registrar, to email at least two reminders before a domain expires (about a month and about a week before) and one more within five days after, if it is neither renewed nor deleted.

DNSimple says these notices come from its upstream partners and go to the registrant's email address; they can't be turned off. DNSimple also emails your notification address about two months before an auto-renewal.

nmspc adds its own reminders 60, 30, 14, 7, 1 days before.

Why are some of my DNSimple domains listed without an expiry date?

Those are domains whose DNS is hosted at DNSimple but which are registered elsewhere. nmspc offers them unticked; if you track one, its expiry comes from the registry instead.

Does nmspc renew my DNSimple domains?

No. nmspc never renews, transfers or changes a domain. It reads your DNSimple domains and reminds you 60, 30, 14, 7, 1 days before each one expires, by push notification on any plan and by email on Pro. Renewing stays with DNSimple.
