Domain endings / .fi
A .fi expires on its expiry date.
For one more month only the holder can renew it; then anyone can take it.
Traficom doesn't renew a .fi by itself; your registrar does, for one to five years at a time. After the expiry date there's a month in which the holder can still renew. Then the name is released, on a date Traficom's WHOIS already shows.
When does a .fi domain expire?
A .fi expires on the expiry date in the registry record. There's no automatic renewal at the registry; your registrar renews it, or agrees with you to renew it automatically.
Is there a grace period for .fi?
Yes, one month. After the expiry date the name is held for the previous holder, who can still renew it through a registrar. Traficom's cyber security centre says the domain's services don't work during that month.
What happens when a .fi domain expires?
These are Traficom's stages.
- Grace periodOne month
- The name is held for the previous holder, who can renew it through a registrar.
- ReleasedOn the available date
- Not renewed: the name becomes free for anyone to register.
How long can you register a .fi domain for?
From 1 to 5 years at a time.
How do I look up a .fi domain's expiry date?
Ask the registry's RDAP server, https://rdap.fi/rdap/rdap/, or type the name in the box above and nmspc asks the same server for you. IANA's RDAP bootstrap file lists that server for .fi; if it doesn't answer, nmspc falls back to WHOIS at whois.fi.
What else is different about .fi?
Traficom's WHOIS shows two dates for a .fi: expires, and available, the day it will be released if nobody renews it.
Anyone can register a .fi, company or private person, wherever they live.
A .fi removed at the holder's request also gets a month's grace, during which the removal can be cancelled.
Who runs .fi?
Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, runs .fi. You register and renew a .fi through a registrar.
How nmspc keeps track
Add a .fi domain and nmspc reads its expiry date from the registry, then reminds you 60, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before it runs out, and before its certificate does. Free for every domain. Open nmspc
